Mimosa extract

Acacia Decurrens Flower Extract

This botanical extract comes from the flowers of an Australian tree in the legume family. The flowers contain aromatic, waxy and phenolic compounds and are used in cosmetics for their gentle conditioning properties and fragrance. Their precise properties depend on the extraction method, so it is important to distinguish between water-based extracts, oil-based extracts and floral wax.

Mimosa extract may soften the skin, form a light protective film and provide antioxidant phenolic compounds. Aromatic extracts also add fragrance, although this is not an active skincare benefit. Clinical data on the flower extract itself are limited, so it is best to focus on its conditioning and sensory functions without exaggerated claims about rejuvenation.

It is suitable for products for normal, dry and mature skin, particularly when used in an emollient or wax form. People with sensitive skin or fragrance allergies should exercise caution, as aromatic plant extracts can cause a contact reaction. For acne-prone skin, the type of carrier and the concentration of waxy components are key considerations.

A safety assessment of several Acacia species notes that derivatives of Acacia decurrens are used in cosmetics as astringent and conditioning ingredients, and that the available data support their safety under normal conditions of use (International Journal of Toxicology, 2005). However, directly measured clinical effects of the flower extract on wrinkles or pigmentation are not yet sufficiently documented.

The amount used depends on the concentration and type of extract, usually around 0,1 to 2 per cent. The ingredient should be added during the cool-down phase and protected from light. For aromatic grades, allergens must be assessed and correctly recorded in the safety documentation.

The effects of plant extracts can vary depending on the plant species, the part used, the solvent and the marker compound content. Two ingredients with similar names may therefore not be interchangeable. A reliable supplier provides details of the extraction method, microbiological purity and standardisation. It is also advisable to monitor the colour, scent and stability of the finished product, as natural origin does not automatically mean there is no risk of irritation. A patch test on a small area is therefore sensible too.
