Camellia oil

Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil

This plant oil is pressed from the seeds of an evergreen shrub related to the tea plant. It is traditionally used in East Asia for both skin and hair. It is particularly rich in oleic acid and also contains linoleic acid, tocopherols and other antioxidants. It has a silky glide and, when properly processed, feels lighter than many rich plant oils.

Camellia oil replenishes surface lipids, reduces roughness and helps limit water loss through a compromised skin barrier. The oil layer softens flaky skin and improves suppleness, while antioxidants protect lipids from oxidation. Its high oleic acid content makes it easy to spread, but larger amounts may feel too rich on highly reactive or acne-prone skin.

It is suitable for dry, mature, dehydrated skin and skin stressed by wind or cold. Dry hair and nails can also benefit. It is used at lower concentrations on combination skin. For oily and acne-prone skin, we recommend a light emulsion rather than pure oil, with gradual testing.

In an experimental model of atopic dermatitis, camellia oil significantly improved signs of damage, increased filaggrin expression and supported skin barrier repair (European Journal of Histochemistry, 2025). This was a preclinical study in an animal model, so the findings cannot automatically be taken to indicate the same clinical effect in humans.

It is used at concentrations of approximately 1 to 20 per cent in creams and serums, and at higher concentrations in oil-only products. It needs to be protected from light, heat and oxidation. An antioxidant in the formula helps maintain stability for longer. For sensitive skin, a patch test of the finished product is recommended.

When using oils in skincare, the amount matters. A few drops on slightly damp skin usually feel more comfortable than a thick layer on completely dry skin. Oil provides the emollient part of a routine but does not supply water itself, so it is often combined with a hydrating serum. Oxygen, light and heat affect stability, making suitable packaging an essential part of product quality. A carefully chosen antioxidant also helps protect against oxidation.
