Green clay
Montmorillonite
Green clay, also known as montmorillonite, is a 100 % natural mineral material formed over thousands of years through the breakdown of rocks. It is a type of earth containing magnesium aluminium silicate, magnesium and numerous trace elements that affect the human body. In cosmetics, it is used as a fine powder, mixed with water, facial oil or a hydrolat to create a smooth paste.
This ingredient acts primarily as a powerful absorbent and cleanser, effectively moisturising, removing impurities and detoxifying the skin. It reduces excess sebum production, tightens pores and soothes inflammation, while also offering antiseptic properties against bacteria on the skin's surface. A study published in 2008 confirmed that green clay can inhibit bacterial growth, which could help in the treatment of ulcers and other skin conditions. Further scientific research shows that montmorillonite supports skin barrier repair and stimulates collagen synthesis, accelerating the healing of damaged tissue.
Green clay is particularly suitable for **oily, combination and acne-prone skin** that needs cleansing and sebum regulation. It is also recommended for people with blemish-prone skin, as it helps clear blemishes and visibly mattifies the complexion. As it can be slightly drying, it is not recommended for use more than once a week; for dry or sensitive skin, it is best applied only once every few weeks.
