Star anise is a fragrant fruit from the star anise tree. It has a characteristic warm, spicy anise scent. Star anise contains folates, B vitamins, vitamins C and A, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, manganese, calcium and omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids, folic acid and pantothenic acid. This essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of star anise fruits, which preserves its natural components. It is a 100% natural product without synthetic additives, often used in organic cosmetics for its purity and strong aroma. Illicium verum grows in the subtropical regions of Asia, especially in Vietnam and China, where the fruits are traditionally hand-harvested to preserve quality. In addition to cosmetics, it is used in aromatherapy and food production, but in cosmetics we appreciate its rich content of essential oils such as anethole, which gives it its characteristic scent and therapeutic properties.

The mechanism of action includes strong antiseptic and antibacterial effects, which destroy the cells of harmful microorganisms and prevent their spread. It has antioxidant properties, neutralizes free radicals and protects cells from oxidative stress. It soothes irritated skin, reduces inflammation and supports regeneration. It strengthens the skin barrier thanks to omega-6 fatty acids, which restore the lipid layer and retain moisture. At concentrations of 0.5-2% in cosmetic products, it exhibits significant antimicrobial effects without drying the skin. It is added to oral hygiene products for a refreshing effect and to combat bacteria.

It is recommended for oily, acne-prone and problematic skin, where it helps regulate sebaceous glands and reduces inflammation. It is also suitable for sensitive and dehydrated skin thanks to its soothing and hydrating properties. For mature skin, it is ideal for antioxidant protection against aging. Avoid it during pregnancy due to its strong action and always dilute it in a carrier oil. It combines best with jojoba or argan oil for a synergistic effect on regeneration.

A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2015) showed that an extract of Illicium verum at a concentration of 1% inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus by 98% and Candida albicans by 95% after 24 hours of exposure. Further research in Molecules (2018) showed that anethole from star anise at a concentration of 0.5% reduced the inflammatory marker IL-6 by 68% in a model of irritated skin.
