Violet extract
Viola Odorata Leaf Extract
This botanical extract is obtained from the leaves of sweet violet grown in Europe and Asia. The leaves contain flavonoids, phenolic acids, mucilaginous polysaccharides and aromatic molecules. In cosmetics, it is used at low levels for its antioxidant, soothing and sensory properties. Its precise properties depend on the solvent and standardisation.
Violet extract may neutralise some free radicals, contribute a mild antimicrobial effect and help soothe dry skin thanks to its mucilaginous components. Clinical evidence for its effects on wrinkles or pigmentation is limited, so it should not be presented as a potent anti-ageing active ingredient. It is better suited as an addition to a hydrating, antioxidant formula.
We recommend it for normal, dry, mature and mildly sensitive skin that tolerates botanical extracts well. For skin with rosacea, eczema or a fragrance allergy, choose a fragrance-free, low-concentration grade and carry out a patch test. For oily skin, it can be included in a lightweight water-based serum without heavy oils.
A laboratory study of Viola odorata extracts demonstrated antioxidant and antimicrobial activity and used the extract as an active ingredient in a protective film formulation (Polymers, 2023). This was in vitro and materials research, not a clinical study of wrinkles. The results therefore support its antioxidant potential, rather than a guaranteed visible effect on the skin.
Typical usage levels are approximately 0,1 to 2 per cent, depending on the concentration of the extract. The raw ingredient is added during the cool-down phase and protected from light. With natural extracts, the colour, scent, allergen content and microbiological stability of each production batch need to be monitored.
The effects of botanical extracts can vary depending on the plant species, the part used, the solvent and the levels of marker compounds. Two raw ingredients with similar names may therefore not be interchangeable. A reputable supplier provides details of the extraction method, microbiological purity and standardisation. It is also advisable to monitor the colour, scent and stability of the finished product, as a natural origin does not automatically mean there is no risk of irritation. A patch test on a small area is therefore sensible too.
