Avenaplex
Avena Sativa Kernel Extract
This plant complex is derived from oat kernels and contains beta-glucans, lipids, proteins and phenolic avenanthramides. Oats have been used in soothing baths for centuries. Modern extracts are standardised and purified so they can be used in serums, creams and products for sensitive skin without coarse particles.
Avenaplex binds water, forms a protective film and suppresses inflammatory cytokines. Avenanthramides help relieve itching and redness, while beta-glucans and lipids support the skin barrier. The extract is gentle, but it is not a substitute for eczema treatment. It works best in a fragrance-free emollient formulation with ceramides and humectants.
We recommend it for dry, sensitive, eczema-prone and reactive skin, and for children's skin in age-appropriate products. It is also useful when the skin barrier is compromised following exfoliation or retinoid use. Oat allergy is rare but possible. For people with coeliac disease, tolerance when applied to the skin varies, and purity without wheat contamination is important.
A clinical study of a lotion containing colloidal oatmeal showed significant improvements in dryness, hydration and skin barrier function. Laboratory tests confirmed multiple effects, including the regulation of inflammatory genes (Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, 2016). These findings support oats as one of the best-documented natural ingredients for dry and sensitive skin.
The amount used depends on standardisation, often around 0,1 to 3 per cent. The extract is added during the cool-down phase and protected from microbial contamination. For products intended for very sensitive skin, it is recommended to avoid fragrance, essential oils and high concentrations of alcohol.
The soothing effect is most noticeable in a simple routine without excessive fragrance, essential oils or layering several acids at once. If you have reactive skin, it is sensible to test a new product on a small area first. Persistent burning, pronounced flaking or worsening redness are not signs of normal adjustment and are reasons to stop using the product and consult a dermatologist. Consistent daily sun protection is also important.
