Coconut CO2 Fragrance

Cocos Nucifera Fruit Extract

This aromatic ingredient is obtained by extracting coconut flesh with pressurised carbon dioxide. The process uses no conventional organic solvents and primarily captures lipophilic aroma and flavour molecules. The result is a concentrated extract with a distinctive coconut profile, used mainly to fragrance products and enhance their sensory qualities.

Coconut CO2 fragrance gives products a warm, sweet and creamy scent. Depending on its composition, it may contain small amounts of lipids and antioxidants, but it should not be presented as a substitute for coconut oil or as a potent hydrating active ingredient. Its main function is fragrance. On sensitive skin, any aromatic extract may increase the risk of irritation or contact allergy.

It is suitable for body care, hair care and rinse-off products for users who tolerate fragranced formulations well. For skin with rosacea, eczema, very sensitive skin or skin with a fragrance allergy, a fragrance-free alternative is more suitable. For acne-prone skin, what matters most is the overall combination of oils and fragrances, rather than the coconut origin alone.

A safety assessment of coconut-derived ingredients reviewed data on topical exposure and concluded that extracts from coconut flowers, fruit and liquid endosperm are safe at current cosmetic concentrations and under current conditions of use (International Journal of Toxicology, 2023). The assessment supports safety, not claims of clinically proven hydration from a specific CO2 fragrance extract.

It is used at very low levels, depending on its intensity and the supplier's recommendations. The allergen profile, IFRA restrictions and fragrance stability under exposure to heat and light must be checked. In facial skincare, the concentration should be minimal and clearly justified by the intended sensory effect.

Fragrance can significantly enhance the enjoyment of using a product, but it is not essential for the skin barrier. In facial products and products that remain in contact with the skin for a long time, the amount should be as low as possible. The composition of natural extracts may vary slightly between batches, so allergen checks and up-to-date documentation are necessary. Sensitive users should always opt for a fragrance-free alternative.
