Sarcosine

Sarcosine

This simple amino acid compound is a natural metabolite of glycine and is produced for cosmetic use to a pure, controlled standard of quality. It dissolves readily in water and is mainly used in products designed to regulate sebum. It is neither an exfoliating acid nor an antibiotic. In a formula, it acts as a gentle metabolic modulator of the sebaceous glands.

Sarcosine helps limit excess sebum production by influencing the conversion of testosterone to the more active dihydrotestosterone and the associated signalling in sebum-producing cells. It may reduce shine, an oily film and the appearance of pores without harshly stripping the skin. It delivers the best results alongside niacinamide, zinc, gentle acids and lightweight hydration.

We recommend it for oily, combination and acne-prone skin, especially where there is excessive shine and the T-zone becomes oily quickly. It is also suitable for sensitive skin that cannot tolerate high levels of acids or alcohol. Dry skin does not usually need it, unless there are localised oily areas.

A clinical evaluation of a sebum-regulating cream recorded a 33 per cent reduction in the clinical oiliness score, a 20 per cent reduction in sebum levels and a 42 per cent reduction in the area of oily patches after four weeks. A visible effect was reported by 95 per cent of volunteers (Skin Research and Technology, 2007). The formula contained several active ingredients, so the results cannot be attributed solely to sarcosine.

Typical usage levels are approximately 0,5 to 2 per cent, depending on the technical data sheet. It is suitable for the water phase and a slightly acidic to neutral pH. When formulating for oily skin, it is important to include humectants and barrier support to prevent the skin from drying out.

When introducing targeted active skincare, it is best to start gradually and avoid changing several products at once during the first few weeks. This makes it easier to distinguish the effects from irritation. Visible changes in texture or tone usually require several weeks of regular use. Daily SPF protection, gentle cleansing and a well-functioning skin barrier have a significant influence on whether the results are good and lasting.
