Phytic Acid
Natural chelating agent serves as a natural alternative to EDTA. In combination with cosmetic antioxidants, it works synergistically. It is a substance of natural origin that occurs naturally in cells and plant fibers, for example in cereals, grains, seeds, bran, or fruit. It appears as a light yellow liquid. It is used in food processing, cosmetics, and dentistry, where it binds minerals such as phosphorus, zinc, calcium, or iron, thereby preventing their poorer absorption. It regulates cholesterol and blood glucose levels. In the cosmetics industry, it functions mainly as a preservative and stabilizer, deactivates metal ions in the product, prevents yellowing and spoilage, and extends shelf life. It is used in shampoos, cleansing products, face masks, and sunscreens. It is a bio extract obtained from plant sources without synthetic processing, which makes it an eco-friendly choice for natural cosmetics.
Function acts as a chelating agent that binds metal ions and stabilizes formulations, preventing oxidation. It moisturizes the skin by promoting water retention, restores the skin barrier by regulating minerals, and acts as a powerful antioxidant by neutralizing free radicals. It has mild exfoliating effects by removing dead cells and soothes irritated skin with anti-inflammatory properties. At a concentration of 0.1-1% in serums and creams, it significantly improves vitamin C stability and prolongs its effectiveness.
Recommendations it is ideal for dry, sensitive, oily, acne-prone, dehydrated, and mature skin. I recommend it for people with oily, acne-prone skin, where it reduces inflammation and clogged pores. On sensitive skin, it soothes redness and supports healing. For mature skin, it protects against oxidative stress; for dry and dehydrated skin, it increases hydration. Suitable for all age groups, especially for eczema or after peeling, where it stabilizes the skin.
Citations, specific numbers and statistics A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (2004) showed that phytic acid at a concentration of 0.5% inhibits tyrosinase by 92%, thereby reducing hyperpigmentation. Another study in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (2019) showed that at a concentration of 1% it chelates iron and reduces the formation of hydroxyl radicals by 85%, thereby protecting fibroblasts from oxidation. A clinical study in Dermatology Research and Practice (2015) confirmed that a 2% solution in serums improved skin hydration by 25% after 4 weeks in patients with acne.
