Hydrolyzed elastin
Hydrolyzed Elastin
Hydrolyzed elastin is a protein derived from natural elastin, which is found in the connective tissue of animals, especially in the skin and blood vessels. It is a broken-down elastic protein split into smaller molecules by hydrolysis, which allows for better absorption through the skin. Elastin is the second most common protein in the human body and occurs naturally in the skin, where it forms the basic structure of connective tissue together with collagen and hyaluronic acid. During hydrolysis, elastin molecules are broken down into amino acids and peptides, which have a lower molecular weight and better penetration into deeper layers of the skin. In cosmetics, this preparation is usually obtained from marine sources or animal tissues and processed according to strict European standards without chemical additives.
Hydrolyzed elastin functions as a multifunctional ingredient with a primary mechanism of moisturizing and restoring the skin barrier. Elastin molecules create a protective film on the skin’s surface that retains moisture and protects the skin from transepidermal water loss, thereby reducing dehydration and increasing hydration. It also acts as a restorative agent that stimulates cell growth and supports the skin’s natural regeneration. Elastin contains a high content of amino acids, which are the building blocks of elastin fibers, helping restore the skin’s elasticity and suppleness. At the same time, it acts as a mild antioxidant that protects the skin from oxidative stress. Given its mechanism, it is most effective with continuous use, with its firming and wrinkle-reducing effects appearing within 4 to 8 weeks of regular application.
Hydrolyzed elastin is recommended for people with mature skin showing signs of aging, including wrinkles and fine lines. It is ideal for dry and dehydrated skin that needs intensive moisturizing and regeneration. It is also suitable for sensitive skin, because its protein-based nature is usually well tolerated and does not contain irritating chemicals. For skin requiring firming and lifting of sagging tissues, elastin has proven to be an effective aid. Due to its protective properties, it is also suitable for skin damaged by chemical substances or environmental stress.
Scientific research confirms the effectiveness of elastin in cosmetics. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science showed that hydrolyzed elastin at a concentration of 2 to 5 percent increases skin hydration by 25 to 35 percent over the course of 4 weeks. Another study documented that elastin supports collagen production and improves skin elasticity, as measured with a cutometer, with the observed increase in elasticity reaching 20 percent after 8 weeks of application of a product containing 3 percent hydrolyzed elastin.
