alpha-lipoic acid

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid or ALA (short for alpha-lipoic acid), is a natural organic compound that occurs naturally in the mitochondria of the body's cells as part of enzyme systems. It acts as a coenzyme in metabolic processes involved in cellular energy production. This compound is produced synthetically for cosmetic use, ensuring consistency and availability in skincare products. It belongs to a group of so-called bioactive extracts obtained through biotechnological processes. Alpha-lipoic acid is unique in being soluble in both water and fats (lipids), making it a versatile antioxidant capable of acting in different parts of the cellular structure.

ALA works through its powerful antioxidant properties. It neutralises highly reactive molecules called free radicals, which form naturally in the body and cause oxidative stress and damage to tissue cells. One of alpha-lipoic acid's exceptional abilities is its potential to regenerate other antioxidants – it can regenerate vitamins C and E, restoring their antioxidant capacity. Thanks to its affinity for both fats and water, it penetrates effectively through the skin's protective lipid layer (stratum corneum) into the deeper layers of the dermis. In the skin, it improves hydration, supports skin barrier repair and helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect, soothing irritated areas and reducing inflammation.

Alpha-lipoic acid is particularly recommended for mature, tired and dehydrated skin with visible signs of ageing. It also delivers excellent results on photoaged skin affected by UV radiation and free radicals. Its antioxidant and soothing properties also make it suitable for sensitive and irritated skin, including skin with concerns such as early signs of acne or inflammation. By helping to brighten the skin and minimise pores, it is also suitable for oily, blemish-prone skin.

Research documents the effectiveness of alpha-lipoic acid at concentrations of 0,5 to 5 % in cosmetic products. A study published in Dermatologic Surgery (2007) showed that ALA at a concentration of 5 % significantly reduced fine lines, increased skin elasticity and improved the overall appearance of the skin in middle-aged women. Scientific observations also confirm that ALA is approximately 400 times more powerful than the combination of vitamins C and E in terms of its antioxidant capacity. This ingredient works particularly well with other active cosmetic ingredients, supporting their penetration and bioavailability and thereby enhancing their therapeutic effects.
