Silver citrate
Silver Citrate
Colloidal silver citrate provides the skin with protection against external factors that trigger inflammatory processes. It stimulates skin regeneration and its active healing and renewal, especially when there are small abrasions and wounds on the surface. This raw material is obtained through an electrolytic process in which an electric current releases fine silver particles into distilled water, creating a stable colloidal solution with particles smaller than 10 nm. Historically, silver has been used since antiquity, for example in China around the 15th century BCE for disinfection, and in the 19th century in Western medicine before the advent of antibiotics. In modern cosmetics, it serves as a natural antimicrobial agent that extends product shelf life and protects against microorganisms.
It functions primarily as a powerful antimicrobial and antibacterial agent that destroys bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes, responsible for acne, as well as viruses and fungi, by damaging their cell membranes. It soothes irritated and reddened skin, supports anti-inflammatory processes, reduces sebum production, and stimulates regeneration. It prevents infections in injuries, burns, or wounds, thereby speeding up healing. In cosmetics, it is used in concentrations of 15–40 ppm; for example, 40 ppm is ideal for oily skin against bacteria and fungi, while 15 ppm soothes dry skin.
It is recommended especially for oily, problematic, and acne-prone skin, where it reduces pimples, enlarged pores, and excess sebum. It is also suitable for sensitive, irritated, or dehydrated skin prone to eczema or psoriasis, where it soothes inflammation and itching. It helps with minor wounds, sunburns, and fungal foot infections. It is not recommended to expose treated skin to direct sunlight because of the possible risk of argyria with long-term overuse.
A study published in the thesis Characterization of Liposomes with Silver Nanoparticles (Charles University, 2023) demonstrated lower toxicity of silver nanoparticles compared with colloidal silver in a Daphnia magna test, confirming safety for topical use in cosmetics. Further research confirms a broad antimicrobial spectrum against staphylococci, streptococci, and fungi, with effectiveness visible within hours in acne.
