Vitamin B9 folic acid
Folic acid
Vitamin B9, or folic acid, has the greatest effect in caring for aging skin and is important for DNA formation and repair. Folic acid can slow premature skin aging by stimulating skin cells (keratinocytes, fibroblasts) and is also capable of repairing damaged DNA. It acts as a coenzyme and is crucial for many biochemical processes. Folic acid supports fibroblast growth and stimulates the division of both aged and mature cells. In the presence of folic acid, fibroblasts have a more regular shape, which is a sign of their higher proliferative capacity, that is, their ability to divide. Premature death of skin cells occurs when a cell is damaged by trauma (UV radiation, insufficient nutrition) or by infection and inflammation. Folic acid supports cell viability after exposure to UV rays. In the case of fibroblasts, it increases it by 58%, and the level of protection of keratinocytes then rises even more. Folic acid therapy before exposure to UV radiation can therefore act preventively against photoaging and prolong the lifespan of skin cells. It occurs naturally in leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and lettuce, in fruits such as bananas and melons, legumes, nuts, and whole-grain products. In cosmetics, synthetic forms or bio-extracts from these plant sources are used.
The mechanism of action includes moisturizing by supporting the function of the skin barrier and retaining moisture in the skin. It restores the barrier and protects against dryness, acting as an antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress and toxins, thereby minimizing inflammation. It stimulates collagen production, supports cell division and repair, including DNA damaged by UV radiation. In concentrations commonly used in cosmetics (0.1-1%), it increases the proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes after UV exposure, where it increases fibroblast viability by 58%.
I recommend it for mature skin with signs of aging, dry and dehydrated skin, sensitive skin exposed to UV radiation, as well as skin with hyperpigmentation caused by folate deficiency or acne-prone skin thanks to its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects. Ideal for those seeking prevention of photoaging and support of cellular renewal.
A study published in Hygiena (2022) showed that daily supplementation with folic acid in a dose of 0.5-5.0 mg reduces plasma homocysteine levels by approximately 25%, which contributes to vascular protection and indirectly supports skin health by reducing oxidative stress. Another study confirmed that 4 µg of folic acid daily reduces the risk of neural tube defects by 72%, illustrating its key role in cell division relevant also for skin cells.
