Cellulose pellets D5
Cellulose
Cellulose is a polysaccharide made up of beta-D-glucose that forms the main structural component of plant cell walls. Together with lignin and hemicelluloses, it contributes to the formation of secondary cell walls and is the most abundant biopolymer on Earth, with up to 1,5 × 10^9 tonnes produced each year. Cellulose synthesis takes place in plant cells with the help of the enzyme cellulose synthase, which produces long, unbranched chains of glucose units linked by β-1,4-glycosidic bonds. These chains form microfibrils, strong fibres stabilised by hydrogen bonds, which provide plants with structure and protection. In nature, it comes from renewable sources such as wood or cotton and is biodegradable, making it an environmentally favourable raw material. In cosmetics, it is often processed into beads suspended in D5 (dimethicone oil), giving it specific properties for application to the skin.
D5 cellulose beads act as a gentle exfoliant, physically removing dead cells and impurities from the skin's surface thanks to the angular shape of the particles. They work through mechanical friction without damaging the skin barrier, restoring skin's smoothness and radiance. These microparticles are 100 % naturally derived, biodegradable and free from microplastics, unlike synthetic scrubs. In cosmetic formulations, a concentration of 1-5 % is recommended depending on the coarseness of the beads, with the D5 size (approximately 100-200 microns) providing medium-intensity exfoliation suitable for both face and body.
It is particularly recommended for normal to oily skin and acne-prone skin with blackheads, but also for dry and sensitive skin, where it provides an alternative to harsh exfoliants. It is ideal for people looking for sustainable alternatives to plastic particles, including those with dehydrated or more mature skin, where it supports surface renewal without irritation. Suitable for all age groups, including children and pregnant women, as it is non-allergenic and non-toxic.
A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (2018) showed that cellulose particles at a concentration of 3 % in a scrub reduced the thickness of the stratum corneum by 25 % after 4 weeks of daily use, improving the penetration of active ingredients and reducing the appearance of pores (Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2018). Further research in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2020) reports that biodegradable cellulose exfoliants reduced irritation by 40 % compared with polyethylene scrubs on sensitive skin.
