Platinum mica, 100% of mineral origin
Mica and Titanium Dioxide CI 77891
Natural micas are obtained from raw ore found in the Earth's crust, particularly in regions such as India, Russia and Finland. They are then purified, heat-treated, ground and sieved to produce fine flakes suitable for cosmetic use. These minerals, such as muscovite or biotite, occur naturally in rocks such as granite and marble and belong to the sheet silicate group. Platinum mica is specially coated with titanium dioxide, which gives it its characteristic pearlescent sheen and shimmering effect. The final shade and appearance depend on the type and amount of mineral added. This process ensures that the pigment is 100% mineral-derived, free from synthetic additives and fully compatible with natural cosmetics.
Platinum mica of 100% mineral origin is coated with titanium dioxide. Natural mica is completely safe to use: the pigment is not absorbed into the skin and therefore does not enter the bloodstream. The mica used in the product does not flake off the skin. It adheres beautifully, does not dry the skin out and is non-comedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores. Only a thin layer of a mica-based product is needed, giving the skin a more natural appearance. Mica-based products help you achieve better, longer-lasting results. Mica provides a uniquely smooth, creamy and silky feel, illuminates the skin and creates a decorative pearlescent effect without clogging pores or irritating the surface.
Its action is primarily based on optically brightening and evening out skin tone through shimmering particles that reflect light and mask imperfections. It is not absorbed into the skin, protecting the surface barrier from mechanical damage without interfering with its natural hydration. It has neither moisturising nor exfoliating properties, but its layered structure ensures long-lasting adhesion without drying the skin. The typical concentration in colour cosmetics is 1-10 %, depending on the desired effect, allowing a thin layer to be applied for a natural look.
It is recommended for all skin types, including dry, oily, sensitive, acne-prone and mature skin, as it is non-comedogenic and does not settle into pores. It is ideal for those looking for a natural, shimmering finish in make-up, highlighters or soaps without the risk of irritation. Its safety also makes it suitable for the sensitive skin around the eyes.
A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (2018) showed that titanium dioxide-coated mica at a concentration of 5 % improved the optical uniformity of the skin by 28 % after 4 weeks of use in a face powder, as measured by spectrophotometry in 30 volunteers. Further research in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2021) confirmed that synthetically coated mica particles do not penetrate the skin barrier, confirming their safety on the skin's surface without systemic absorption.
