Tangerine essential oil

Citrus Reticulata (Tangerine) Oil

It is obtained by cold pressing the peel of tangerines. Tangerines are the fruits of the mandarin tree Citrus reticulata, just like mandarins. The main difference between a mandarin and a tangerine is the color of the peel: while a mandarin is bright orange, a tangerine is a darker reddish-orange. Tangerine essential oil has an elegant, fresh, sweet fruity aroma. It has cytophylactic properties and helps restore damaged tissues in the body. It helps reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Tangerine oil also works on the hair due to its antiseptic properties and helps in treating dandruff, dry scalp, and other skin infections. This natural extract is rich in limonene, vitamin C, terpinene, and myrcene, which contribute to its antiseptic, antifungal, and antioxidant effects. It is used in cosmetics for its ability to cleanse and tone the skin, and it is obtained in an environmentally friendly way without chemical additives.

Tangerine essential oil acts as a powerful antioxidant rich in vitamin C, which supports type I collagen production by stimulating collagen synthesis in the skin. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and restore the skin barrier by removing bacteria and excess sebum. Cytophylactic effects accelerate wound healing and tissue regeneration, while antifungal properties fight fungi. As a moisturizer, it balances hydration and tones the skin. The recommended concentration in cosmetics is 0.5-2% in diluted form with a carrier oil to avoid photosensitivity.

Ideal for oily, acne-prone, combination, sensitive, and mature skin. It is recommended for acne, scars, stretch marks, dry scalp, and dehydrated skin, where it regulates sebum, reduces redness, and evens out skin tone. Suitable for those seeking gentle cleansing without drying, support for healing, and antioxidant protection. It is not recommended for open wounds or before sun exposure due to its phototoxic properties.

A 2021 study showed that Citrus reticulata essential oil significantly reduced wound size in vivo on the skin and accelerated healing (2021 study on antifungal and antibacterial activity). Another 2020 study identified Citrus reticulata oil as the strongest antioxidant among the tested citrus oils, with antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (Journal of Phytochemical and Biological Properties, 2020). The vitamin C in the oil increases type I collagen synthesis, which supports skin elasticity (2024, study on vitamin C).
