Hematite Extract
Hematite is an iron-rich mineral that, according to ancient legends, was believed to protect warriors from injury in battle through its regenerative properties. Today, it has also been scientifically proven that hematite strengthens skin tissue, supports the production of high-quality collagen, and helps fill in wrinkles. In this way, it restores youthful firmness and volume to the skin. This natural mineral extract comes from deposits in various parts of the world, such as North America, Brazil, and Australia, where it occurs in forms such as specularite or iron roses. Chemically, it is iron oxide (Fe2O3) with a high iron content of up to 70 percent, which gives it a characteristic metallic luster and a hardness of 5-6 on the Mohs scale. In cosmetics, it is used as a bio-extract obtained from finely ground hematite, which is safe for the skin and serves as the basis of an anti-aging complex.
The mechanism of action of hematite lies in strengthening skin tissue and supporting collagen production, thereby restoring the skin’s natural barrier and improving its firmness. As an antioxidant, it protects cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals, contributes to the reduction of wrinkles, and increases skin volume. It supports regeneration, grounds the skin’s energy, and soothes irritation. In cosmetic formulations, it is recommended at concentrations of 1-5 percent, where it most effectively stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen types I and III, which are essential for the structure of the dermis.
Hematite is ideal for mature skin with the first signs of aging, dry and dehydrated skin that is losing elasticity, as well as sensitive skin prone to irritation. I recommend it for women over 30 who are struggling with wrinkles, loss of volume, and oxidative damage, including oily skin with reduced firmness. It is suitable for all skin types that need barrier support and an anti-aging effect without clogging pores.
A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (2018) demonstrated that the application of hematite extract at a concentration of 3 percent increased collagen synthesis by 28 percent in fibroblasts of human dermal cells after 14 days in vitro. Another study in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (2021) reports that mineral complexes with Fe2O3 at a 2-percent concentration reduced the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1) by 35 percent, thereby slowing collagen degradation in aging skin cells. These data confirm the regenerative properties of hematite in anti-aging cosmetics.
