Spruce wood oil
Picea Mariana (Black Spruce) Oil
This essential oil is obtained by distilling the needles and twigs of a coniferous tree that grows in the cold regions of North America, such as Canada and Alaska. It is a natural conifer product rich in monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene, bornyl acetate, and camphene, which give it a characteristic warm, sweet, and balsamic scent with fruity, resinous undertones. Traditionally, it has been used in the indigenous medicine of North American tribes, where it was applied to wounds, skin irritations, and inflammation to promote healing. In modern aromatherapy, it serves as a versatile aid for respiratory support, relaxation, and skin care, and it is always recommended to dilute it with a carrier oil for safe application.
The oil acts as a powerful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent that fights bacteria and fungi, thereby soothing irritation and supporting wound healing. It has antioxidant properties thanks to its alpha-pinene and camphene content, which protect cells from oxidative stress. It moisturizes and revitalizes the skin, restores its natural barrier, reduces redness, and is suitable for exfoliating effects on problem skin. At concentrations of up to 2% in cosmetic products such as creams or gels, it purifies the skin and reduces inflammation. As an antispasmodic, it relieves muscle tension and supports hormonal balance, contributing to overall relaxation.
It is especially recommended for dry, sensitive, oily, and acne-prone skin, where it helps alleviate eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and hormonal acne. It is ideal for dehydrated and mature skin because it minimizes fine lines, firms, and rejuvenates tired skin. It is suitable for skin prone to stress-related flare-ups or hormonal imbalances, as well as for those seeking natural support for immunity and the respiratory tract. Always perform a patch test and do not use it in pure form.
A study published in 2019 showed that alpha-pinene, the main component of the oil at a concentration present in essential oils, exhibits significant antimicrobial activity against microorganisms that cause disease and odor. Further research showed that spruce bark extract down-regulates the NF-κB pathway in TNF-α-activated psoriatic keratinocytes, thereby suppressing inflammation. Black spruce bark extract improved skin barrier health and corneocyte cohesion at concentrations of 0.1% after 28 days of application on 35 volunteers with dry skin.
