Picea abies Leaf Oil

An essential oil obtained by steam distillation from fresh needles of Norway spruce, an evergreen conifer typical of European forests. This natural product comes from the leaves of a tree that grows in cold mountainous regions from the Alps to the Carpathians and North America. It contains major constituents such as alpha- and beta-pinene, camphene, and limonene, which give it a fresh, resinous, woody scent characteristic of conifers. It is produced exclusively from plant sources without synthetic additives, often in organic quality, which ensures high purity and preservation of its natural properties. It is used in aromatherapy and cosmetics for its traditional use in folk medicine.

Its mechanism of action includes soothing and anti-inflammatory effects thanks to monoterpenes, which relieve skin irritation and promote relaxation. It moisturizes and regenerates the skin barrier, protects against environmental influences, and acts as a natural antioxidant thanks to its pinene content. It has anti-seborrheic properties, regulates excessive sebum production, and exfoliating effects improve skin texture. In massage products, it relieves muscle tension. The recommended concentration in cosmetics is 0.5–2% for safe application in order to prevent sensitization.

It is recommended for dry, sensitive, and dehydrated skin, where it supports hydration and barrier repair. Suitable for oily and acne-prone skin thanks to its anti-seborrheic properties, it reduces inflammation and regulates sebum. For mature skin, it acts as an antioxidant against aging. It is ideal for men and athletes in massages for tired muscles, as well as for eczematous or psoriatic skin for soothing. In sauna blends or body balms, it improves tone and elasticity and helps protect against cellulite.

A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2018) showed that spruce needle extract at a 1% concentration inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus by 68% and reduced inflammatory markers in the skin by 45% after 24 hours in vitro. Another study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2021) showed that an essential oil at a 0.5% concentration improved skin hydration by 32% and reduced transepidermal water loss by 25% in dry skin types after 4 weeks of application.
