Walnut kernels
Juglans Regia Powder
Walnut kernels come from the common walnut tree, a widespread species native to Central Asia and south-eastern Europe. These kernels are rich in healthy fats, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which account for up to 70 % of their content, alongside protein (around 15-18 %), fibre (approximately 6 g per 100 g) and carbohydrates (14-15 g per 100 g). They contain vitamins B, E, C and A, as well as minerals such as zinc, copper, magnesium, potassium, iron and manganese. In cosmetics, they are used as a natural powder made from dried, ground kernels, which is 100 % natural, free from synthetic additives and can also be sourced from organically grown walnuts. These kernels are enclosed in a thin, brownish skin rich in polyphenols and antioxidants, which protect the delicate oils from oxidation.
They work by gently exfoliating the skin: the coarse texture of the particles removes dead skin cells without damaging the surface, supporting skin renewal. They also contain zinc, which has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritation, and omega-3 fatty acids, which moisturise and restore the skin's lipid barrier. Antioxidants such as vitamin E and polyphenols protect against free radicals, helping to slow skin ageing. A concentration of 1-5 % in exfoliators and scrubs is recommended for optimal exfoliation without irritation.
Particularly recommended for oily, acne-prone and blemish-prone skin, where it helps regulate sebaceous gland activity, reduce inflammation and remove excess sebum. It is also suitable for dry and dehydrated skin thanks to its moisturising omega fatty acids, for sensitive skin due to its gentle exfoliating action, and for mature skin to support regeneration and antioxidant protection. It is not recommended for very sensitive or damaged skin, where it could cause micro-injuries.
A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (2018) showed that walnut kernel powder at a concentration of 3 % in exfoliating formulations reduced acne formation by 28 % and improved skin hydration by 22 % after 4 weeks of regular use in volunteers with oily skin. Further research confirms the anti-inflammatory effects of zinc from walnuts, which reduces inflammatory markers by 35 % at a concentration of 2 % (International Journal of Dermatology, 2021).
