Most people don’t wash their face regularly, and those who do often get it wrong. 8 essential cleansing rules from dermatologists.

MOST PEOPLE DO NOT WASH THEIR FACE REGULARLY, AND THOSE WHO DO OFTEN DO IT INCORRECTLY.
8 BASIC CLEANSING RULES FROM DERMATOLOGISTS.

A recent study by CeraVe found that 80% of people do not know how to cleanse their face properly. People are often confused about skincare, make common skincare mistakes, and more than 55% do not wash their face regularly despite expert recommendations. Proper cleansing keeps skin healthy, radiant
and hydrated. It removes excess sebum, impurities, toxins and make-up without compromising the skin barrier.

WHY CLEANSING IS SO IMPORTANT
Washing your face properly has many benefits. It cleans and unclogs pores, helps prevent acne and minimises damage from free radicals, which cause premature ageing. It is also key to removing dead skin cells that leave skin looking dull.

The desire for healthy, radiant skin can lead to over-cleansing. Although this may leave skin feeling thoroughly clean, it is actually harmful. Frequent washing and pore cleansing disrupt the natural barrier that protects skin from external factors.

A sensible, balanced skincare routine is important for everyone, regardless of age, gender or skin type. This is especially true for those with eczema, rosacea and other skin conditions where the barrier is already weakened, increasing the risk of inflammation.
A gentle approach and the right choice of cleanser are the foundation of everyday skincare.

A QUICK GUIDE TO CLEAN SKIN

I. Choose the right cleanser
Never use conventional foaming soaps! They disrupt the skin’s healthy pH, irritate and dry it out, and strip it of essential oils. They can also make eczema, dermatitis, acne and rosacea worse.

If you have dry or sensitive skin, look for non-foaming, hydrating cleansers. Deep-cleansing products containing salicylic acid are suitable for oily, combination and acne-prone skin.

There are many types of cleansers available. Each offers a different sensory experience. Choose according to your skin’s condition and your personal preferences. However, pay attention to how your skin reacts: redness, itching, flaking or tightness are signs that the product is not right for your skin.

II. Use lukewarm water
Remember that pores are not doors. Hot water will not open them, and cold water will not close them. Extreme temperatures cause irritation and redness.

III. Wash your face twice a day
Cleanse your skin every day, twice a day. Wash your face in the morning and before bed, as well as after activities that make you sweat heavily.

IV. You do not always need a toner or astringent
A good cleanser works deep within the pores to remove all impurities, including excess sebum. A toner or astringent is recommended if you feel your skin is not thoroughly cleansed.

V. Remove make-up thoroughly before bed

Pores cleanse themselves and release toxins while you sleep. When they are clogged, skin looks tired and unhealthy, becomes irritated and is at risk of inflammation. A regular cleanser will remove light make-up. For heavier make-up, use an eye make-up remover. Double cleansing is also a suitable option. This two-step routine cleanses the skin with plant oils, followed by micellar water.

VI. Be gentle
Never scrub your skin. Vigorous rubbing needlessly irritates and injures the skin and damages its barrier. Use your fingertips or a konjac sponge for gentle, thorough cleansing. Sonic cleansing brushes are suitable for an especially deep cleanse.

Our tip
Konjac sponge
This soft, gentle sponge is made from natural antimicrobial fibre. It naturally cleanses, nourishes, smooths and softens skin. It balances the skin’s pH and acts as an exceptionally gentle exfoliator. It massages the skin and removes dead skin cells, improving its texture and revitalising it overall.

VII. Clean hands, clean towel
Wash your hands thoroughly before every skincare routine. Do not dry your freshly washed face with a shared family towel that has been hanging on the rail for days. Bacteria multiply in damp conditions.
They can easily transfer from the towel to your skin. It is best to gently pat freshly washed skin dry with a soft, clean towel, ideally an antibacterial one reserved for this purpose.

VIII. Remember to moisturise after cleansing
After washing, hydrate your skin with your favourite moisturiser. You can enhance the effects of the active ingredients by applying a facial essence, serum, nourishing emulsion, toner or exfoliating mask before your moisturiser. Your follow-up skincare should reflect your skin’s current condition and needs.
